This didn’t make the choice easy for our selectors Katy Hessel, Paul Hobson and Charmaine Watkiss, who hand-picked 72 works by 55 artists for the Derwent Art Prize 2022 exhibition…and selected five prize winners.
Five artists were awarded £12,500 in cash prizes and gifted Derwent pencils.
Meet the Derwent Art Prize 2022 Winners below!
The First Prize, worth £4,000 and a year’s supply of Derwent Art products, went to Femi Ikotun for his drawing Insecure.
Based in Lagos, Nigeria, Femi joined the awards ceremony virtually and shared his joy over the live stream: “I was very nervous when the announcement was on-going. I was elated and so proud when my name was announced as the First Winner. I’m thankful to everyone involved in the competition for recognising my efforts and rewarding my work. I promise to be a good ambassador for the Derwent Art Prize!”

The Young Artist Prize category rewards artists under the age of 25.
The Young Artist First Prize worth £4,000, went to Melo Konini for Mum, I’m Bored. The Derwent Art Prize 2022 Exhibition was Melo’s first ever showcase. After the ceremony, Melo shared “I still can’t believe I won! Every shortlisted piece I saw at the opening night was brilliant, showcasing the flexibility and versatility of pencil. Thank you, Derwent Art Prize, for putting on a great competition and outstanding exhibition!”

The Young Artist Second Prize, worth £2,000 and a Derwent Lightfast 72 Tin, went to Dylan Leddington for his three entries from a series of drawings entitled Kenopsia. “I am so grateful to the Derwent Art Prize for the opportunity and to the selectors for choosing my drawings for the Young Artist Second Prize. Drawing for me has always been a stable element in my ever-changing life. This award means so much to me at a time where I am questioning certain aspects of practice and person life. I will continue to use drawing as an escape, and I can’t express how much it means to me that others like to escape into the worlds I create” says the artist.
